Counselling Psychologist

Cheryl Málek is a counselling psychologist based in Northcliff (close to Cresta shopping centre), providing psychotherapy to a variety of people who wish to enhance their quality of life, or deal with difficulties that are threatening their or their family’s well-being.

You may have landed on this page because you are angry, anxious or overwhelmed and you are looking for options. You may also be feeling stuck and unsure about whether therapy is for you. Therapy is a way to open up to those thoughts and feelings, and try to live a purposeful life that is meaningful for you. My role is to try and provide an environment for each client where they can explore and experiment with new ways of seeing and being.

What does that mean for you? It means that you and I will start by exploring your life, your struggles, your strengths and the challenges you are faced with. We will set clear goals that you would like to achieve. And then we will spend each session exploring your thoughts and feelings and looking at new ways to respond to the difficulties that your world presents. We will experiment with new behaviour that may be challenging and rewarding. We will create a path, that works for you, your style and your unique circumstances to create a meaningful life.

I use a specific approach to therapy called ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). If you would like to understand more about this approach please read about it here: my approach. I am a registered Counselling Psychologist if you would like to know more about me, my experience and qualifications then you can read about it here: about me

I have been working as a psychologist for over a decade and deeply love the work that I do. Once a client has guided me towards specific goals that they would like to work towards. We then work together, as active and equal partners with the difficult goal of creating and achieving change.

It is not an easy decision to know whether to start therapy or not. I encourage you to explore this website to help you become informed. I have tried to answer all potential questions, from practical questions like rates or making an appointment to questions such a my approach, and information on specific issues people may experience. If you are still unsure you are welcome to send me an email (contact details) and we can start a conversation. I view therapy as a commitment of time, money and energy in order to achieve the goals you set out and so it is important to explore which options will best work for you. Lastly if you are unsure if I am the right person for you please explore other therapists. I have put links to therapists close to the area I practice here resources.

I also offer therapy for child-clients. If you are a parent looking for a therapist for your child please click here (play therapy) for more information.
